The New Pirates
February 2nd 2007 12:09
Noticed how popular Pirates are these days? We get heaps of picture books about Pirates at my work – you know, for the kiddies. 6 and 7 year old boys go nuts for books about Pirates, they love it. But just hold up a moment, and think about this – Pirates were bloodthirsty runaway criminals intent on murder, rape and thievery. Some of the most heinous torture recorded in history has been attributed to Pirates. And we package them and sanitize them and make them loveable in our films, books, cartoons… and no one questions it, because it happened a couple of hundred years ago, and the despicable misery they caused has been forgotten by the public at large.
Prediction – in another 150 years, maybe a little bit more, Nazis will be the new Pirates. History will pass on by, the way it always has, and the people who have been removed from the ‘evils’ of Nazism by generations and eras will think nothing of their children buying colourful books about the loveable roguish Nazis and their exploits. Kids will buy plastic Nazi costumes and play Final Solution in the backyard. A big blockbuster comedy/adventure movie, ‘Nazis of Germania’ will come out and take the world by storm. One of the characters will be played by a much-loved character actor who also happens to be good-looking, and he will claim that Nazis were the original Rock n Rollers, and he will base his Nazi on a famous old rocker like Keith Richards.
You know what I think? Sometimes it’s really lame where our ignorance leads us, and our current socio-historical taboos (like Nazis and the Holocaust) are made hypocritical by the forgetful nature of history Oh yes, I’m well aware of the ‘we must never forget’ doctrine that is taught when the Holocaust is brought up in school history classes – but you wait and see. We know how horrid pirates truly were in their heyday, and we ignore that reality all the same. There are two Pirates – the historical pirate, and the romanticized pirate. Might not there be the same thing in the future – the historical Nazi and the romanticized Nazi? Just you wait and see (if you live for another 150 years that is...)
