The Maine Monster
August 23rd 2006 08:55
Apparently this creature was killed in Turner, Maine, in the US just recently - bringing an end to the mystery surrounding local folklore about the 'Maine Monster'.
It just goes to show that not all 'monsters' all neccessarily fakes. This one appears to be 100% legit.
The 'monster' was apparently hit by a car and various people took photos and had a look, confirming it was most likely the Maine Monster that had 'terrorised' locals for a good fifteen years.
Reports of it's bizarre cries and scary eyes had become local legend in surrounding towns such as Litchfield, Sabattus, Greene, Turner, Lewistone and Auburn. It had been blamed for attacking and killing various large dogs in the last few years. None of the locals were too sure what the poor creature was... speculation included that it might be a hyena or even a dingo that had escaped from somewhere or other. One local described it as 'evil looking' and said it had a horrible stench.
Wildlife officials were invited to examine the remains but they declined and the carcass has since been scavenged by vultures and other such animals. Officials have since conducted DNA tests and revealed that it was rare wolf-dog hybrid.
It's possible, of course, to breed a wolf with a dog (but illegal in a lot of places). The word 'hybrid' is probably not the right word to use as wolves and dogs are nowadays considered to be virtually the same species, whereas the word 'hybrid' is used to only denote cross-species (like Mules or Ligers). Wolfdogs are not really all that rare, so wildlife officials saying that this is a rare wolf-dog hybrid implies that there is something unusual about the Maine Monster's genetic mix - which explains it's unusual appearance (in particular, the short head and other strange features).
Anyway, I just thought I'd relate this story as it's cool to know that all those wacky stories about various local monsters and stuff aren't always a load of crap. Now, someone find me a bunyip!
